Trump calls UK’s Chagos take care of Mauritius an ‘act of whole weak spot’

President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that Britain’s plan to cede sovereignty of the island of Diego Garcia within the Chagos Islands to Mauritius was an “act of whole weak spot,” including that it was “one other in a really lengthy line of nationwide safety the explanation why Greenland needs to be acquired.”

The island of Diego Garcia homes a strategically vital US-UK air base within the Indian Ocean.

Britain and Mauritius final 12 months struck a deal to cross on the sovereignty of the Chagos islands to Mauritius whereas permitting Britain to retain management of the air base underneath a long-term lease.

Trump wrote on his Fact Social account: “Shockingly, our ‘good’ NATO Ally, the UK, is at the moment planning to provide away the Island of Diego Garcia, the positioning of a significant US Navy Base, to Mauritius, and to take action FOR NO REASON WHATSOEVER.”

Trump stated there was little question that “China and Russia have observed this act” by Britain.

The UK authorities didn’t instantly reply to a Reuters’ request for touch upon Tuesday.

Trump has beforehand stated that the encroaching presence of China and Russia makes Greenland very important to US safety pursuits, and repeatedly insisted he’ll accept nothing lower than possession of Greenland.

Britain’s take care of Mauritius was delayed after the Trump’s inauguration in January 2025, with London wanting to provide the brand new administration time to look at the main points of the plan.

In February of that 12 months, Trump indicated he was “inclined to go alongside” with Britain on the settlement.
