Flights and ferries suspended as Tropical Storm Maysak slams southern China’s Hainan province

BEIJING — Tropical Storm Maysak lashed southern China’s island province of Hainan on Friday, making landfall with most winds close to its heart of 23 meters per second (51 mph) and forcing flight, rail and ferry suspensions.
- Maysak hit Hainan’s southeastern coast at round 6:20 p.m. (1020 GMT), China’s Nationwide Meteorological Heart stated.
- The storm is predicted to convey torrential rain to Hainan, in addition to Guangdong, Guizhou and Hunan provinces and the Guangxi area.
- In Hainan, some areas may see rainfall as much as 350 mm inside 24 hours, the nationwide climate forecaster stated.
- Hainan’s Sanya Phoenix Worldwide Airport suspended takeoffs and landings from 5 p.m., after 92 flights have been canceled by 11:30 a.m., whereas all round-island high-speed rail companies have been halted on Friday, state broadcaster CCTV reported.
- Passenger ferry companies throughout the Qiongzhou Strait have been suspended from 2 a.m. and have been anticipated to stay halted for one to 2 days.
- Authorities urged stepped-up monitoring and evacuations from danger areas, calling flood prevention duties “extreme and sophisticated.”
