Folks for the Moral Remedy of Animals (PETA) has introduced a lawsuit in opposition to the Maine Lobster Pageant, claiming that boiling lobsters alive is illegal and merciless.

The animal rights group cites a Maine regulation prohibiting the torture and torment of animals and asks the court docket to declare the pageant a public nuisance.

In an announcement, PETA says partly, “These sentient creatures are painfully scalded to demise via extended publicity to superheated steam with out prior beautiful, mechanical destruction of the mind, or any technique supposed to render them insensible to ache.”

The pageant begins on Wednesday and runs via Sunday in Rockland, Maine.
