WALDORF, Md. (AP) — A fireplace ripped via a home in Charles County, Maryland, on Sunday, killing 4 kids and two adults, authorities mentioned.

One individual managed to flee the blaze reported round 8:40 a.m. on the house in Waldorf, about 55 miles (88 kilometers) south of Baltimore, WTOP-TV reported.

It took about 70 firefighters greater than an hour to regulate the flames. One firefighter was hospitalized and one other first responder was handled on the scene for unspecified accidents.

The reason for the hearth was below investigation. Grasp Deputy State Fireplace Marshal Oliver Alkire mentioned the blaze originated on the appropriate facet of the house inside an enclosed porch.

The ages and names of the victims weren’t launched as of Sunday night.

Alkire mentioned officers didn’t instantly know if the residence had working smoke alarms.
